DEVELOPING AND MARKETING RURAL NEGROS

The Five Loaves and Two Fish

The Province of Negros Occidental and the Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MBCCI) have partnered in an initiative to develop rural and agricultural areas in an effort to combat poverty. This program represents the idea that group efforts can bring about significant transformation, drawing inspiration from the story of the Five Loaves and Two Fish, in which modest contributions resulted in miraculous events. Ensuring that no one is left behind in the quest of prosperity, the focus is on reviving neglected areas and boosting local economies through a series of strategic projects.

Mangrove Forest Rehabilitation and Replacement of Nylon Nets to Bamboo Crab/Fish Traps

Negros Occidental is replacing nylon nets with bamboo crab/fish traps to conserve coastal areas. Mangrove forests, known as the “rainforests of the sea,” are vital for marine biodiversity and supporting coastal communities’ livelihoods. The project aims to preserve fish and crab habitats, act as natural barriers against erosion and storm surges, and help mitigate climate change by capturing toxic carbon emissions. The initiative also strengthens coastal communities’ resilience against environmental challenges.
As stewards of coastal resources, it is crucial to prioritize initiatives promoting sustainable management and conservation of marine ecosystems. By safeguarding vital ecosystems and capturing toxic carbon emissions, this project not only protects coastal communities from natural disasters but also fosters sustainable livelihoods for fishermen.

Installation of River Trash/Plastic Catch Nets

The installation of river trash/plastic catch nets is a crucial intervention in protecting coastal ecosystems and marine biodiversity. These nets intercept and capture floating debris before it reaches sensitive coastal habitats, reducing the risk of entanglement, ingestion, and smothering of marine organisms. The presence of trash and plastic waste in marine environments can have profound ecological consequences, such as smothering coral reefs, blocking sunlight, and introducing toxins into the marine environment. Sea grass beds and mangrove forests are also at risk from debris, preserving their ecological functions and services to coastal communities.

The installation of these nets not only protects coastal ecosystems and marine biodiversity but also upholds the resilience and sustainability of coastal communities. Preserving marine habitats and preventing pollution, these nets serve as guardians of the environment, paving the way for a cleaner and healthier future for generations to come.

Construction/Rehabilitation of Fish Landing Stations

The construction and rehabilitation of fish landing stations in Negros Occidental are crucial for enhancing maritime governance and promoting sustainable fisheries management. These stations enforce marine laws and provincial ordinances, ensuring responsible utilization of marine resources and coastal ecosystem protection. They facilitate monitoring and regulating fishing activities, facilitating compliance with regulations. They also serve as data collection centers, allowing fishers to report catch, species composition, and fishing effort to fisheries managers. They also promote food safety and hygiene standards in the seafood supply chain, maintaining product quality and integrity. These stations also serve as focal points for community engagement and capacity-building initiatives, empowering fishers to adopt sustainable practices and comply with regulations.
